Every UFC event has at least one “trendy upset pick” among the MMA betting community, and when it comes to UFC 109, there are a ton of possibilities.
The one upset pick that seems to be worth throwing a few extra bucks on this time around at UFC 109: Relentless is Dan Miller vs. Demian Maia, even among other interesting possibilities like Mark Coleman over Randy Couture in the main event and Paulo Thiago over Mike Swick in other UFC action.

For some of the hardcore fans out there, one of the main reasons that betting against Maia in this fight seems a good idea stems from a comment he made.
Maia, a jiu-jitsu phenom and one of the best grapplers in the MMA and UFC worlds, has supreme confidence in his chosen art and some people think it even borders on overconfidence. Maia has said in the past that he wants to show the world that it is still possible to win big-time MMA and UFC fights without hurting people, one of the staples of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

While that strategy has worked great for guys like Royce Gracie and Jeremy Horn among others in the past, the new era of well-rounded MMA fighters seems to suggest that those days are all but gone.
Nate Marquardt's 21-second, vicious KO of Maia at UFC 102 is a big piece of evidence against Maia's theory.
Complicating matters even more is that his opponent for UFC 109, Miller, recently received his own black belt in BJJ.
The oddsmakers at BetUs.com still have Maia as a big favorite, however, giving him -375 odds to +275 for Miller, the underdog going into this contest.
While a BJJ black belt is nothing to sneeze at and a huge accomplishment for Miller, staying out of trouble against Maia is still going to be a tough thing to do at UFC 109. Maia is on another level, quite frankly, but if Miller (11-2 record) can stay on the defensive and keep this fight on the feet, he has a great chance to win.
Maia has been working hard on his striking and comes in with an 11-1 record in his career, with the only loss coming to Marquardt.

But Miller seems like a great stylistic matchup for Maia according to many MMA betting enthusiasts, as he is a tough guy and an extremely smart fighter who comes from a strong MMA background (his brother Jim is also a quality UFC fighter in the lightweight division)
Miller should be able to stay out of trouble on the ground and keep the fight standing, in which case this fight will be anyone's game.

Neither guy has a ton of power, but Miller has less to lose and his boxing skills have come along nicely lately.
This fight won't be easy for either guy and could come down to the judges' scorecards, but the prediction here is that Miller uses his grit and intelligence to eek out a decision against the highly-favored, much-more decorated Maia in what could be a Fight of the Night contender and a big betting upset at UFC 109: Relentless.
